Cooking in Westerly

The Westerly table.

Eating with a private chef in Westerly is different from eating at a Watch Hill restaurant in July. The dinners that get remembered happen at the Bluff Avenue summer house with twelve guests around the long table, at the Misquamicut rental on the first night the family arrives, at the Avondale family home for the rehearsal dinner, on the porch in Watch Hill when the sun is dropping over Block Island Sound.

With a private chef, the night happens in your home, summer rental, or family compound. Custom menu built around your guests. Full in-home service. Complete cleanup. You stay at the table the whole time.

The sourcing is local. Newport Seafood for the fish and shellfish. Aquidneck Meat for the lamb, beef, and pork. Clements for produce. Narragansett Creamery for the cheese boards (Atwells Gold and Divine Providence are the regulars). Provençal Bakery for the bread. Local farms in Tiverton and Little Compton for heirloom tomatoes and stone fruit. Schartner Farms in Exeter for berries and sweet corn when they hit. The menu reflects what’s actually peaking the week of your dinner.

What’s included.

Every Westerly booking includes:

  • A custom menu designed around your guest count, occasion, dietary needs, and the season
  • Full grocery sourcing from Rhode Island purveyors, fish markets, and farm stands
  • In-home preparation in your kitchen, your timeline
  • Plated multi-course service or family-style dinner, your choice
  • Full table service throughout the evening
  • Complete kitchen cleanup at the end of the night

Not included by default: wine and spirits, specialty rentals (linens, glassware, larger serving pieces), additional staffing for larger groups or for hors d’oeuvres receptions, travel surcharges (Westerly is at the far southwest of the service area), and gratuity. Wine, spirits, rentals, staffing, and travel surcharges are typically discussed upfront with the quote if relevant.

You arrive to a set table. You leave the night with nothing to handle.

The Westerly kitchen

What changes across Westerly.

Watch Hill is the high end of the Westerly kitchen range. The Bluff Avenue and Watch Hill Road summer estates run to professional ranges, double ovens, generous islands. Five courses with hot pickup all night is the easy version of the job there. Avondale is similar, with the older family homes carrying full kitchens, and the rehearsal-dinner format that fits a long pine table with sixteen seats.

Misquamicut beach houses run tighter. Summer rental galley kitchens with one oven, a half-fridge that fills up the second a fourteen-guest dinner load arrives, a single dishwasher. The menu adapts. Pre-set composed first courses, fewer last-minute platings, more sauces finished in advance. The result on the table is the same.

The drive matters. Newport to Watch Hill is about an hour through Charlestown and South Kingstown. I leave Newport early on the booking day, hit the suppliers on the way, and arrive at the host home 2.5 hours before service. The cold chain stays intact in coolers in the car so the seafood and the produce show up the way they came off the boat that morning.

Common Westerly questions

Questions about Westerly bookings.

Do you cook in Watch Hill?
Yes. Watch Hill is the most common Westerly booking. The Bluff Avenue summer houses, the Watch Hill Road family compounds, and the harborside cottages are all within service range. The Ocean House and Watch Hill Inn handle their own dining; private chef bookings are for the homes.
Do you cook in Misquamicut and Avondale?
Yes. Misquamicut beach houses, Avondale family homes, and downtown Westerly residences are all regular bookings. Each has its own kitchen character. Misquamicut tends toward summer-rental galley kitchens, Avondale leans toward older family homes with full kitchens.
How many guests can you cook for in Westerly?
Most Westerly dinners land between six and fourteen guests. For larger groups, additional staff joins the booking so service stays smooth.
How far in advance should I book a Westerly dinner?
For July and August Watch Hill weekends, six to eight weeks. For shoulder season (May, late September, October), two to three weeks is usually enough. Westerly’s summer rental season fills early because of Watch Hill demand.
Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?
Yes. Vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, pescatarian, severe nut allergies, celiac, kosher-style, and halal are all accommodated. The menu is built around the most restrictive eater.
Do you do brunch in Westerly?
Yes. Westerly brunch bookings are common for the morning after the wedding, family-weekend mornings at the Watch Hill rental, and Mother’s Day at the Misquamicut beach house. See the private chef brunch page.
Do you do hors d’oeuvres receptions in Westerly?
Yes. Watch Hill summer galas, Misquamicut beach gatherings, and Avondale milestone celebrations all run as cocktail-style hors d’oeuvres events. See the hors d’oeuvres page.
Can you do a Westerly wedding-weekend rehearsal dinner?
Yes. Westerly rehearsal dinners are a regular booking, often at Watch Hill rental homes or family compounds. Family-style, leaning coastal-Italian or New England seafood depending on direction.
Do you handle wine pairings?
Wine sourcing is your call. I do not stock or markup beverages. I will recommend pairings that match the menu and serve what you provide throughout the night, including champagne service if it fits the occasion.
Can you do a multi-day stretch for a Watch Hill family week?
Yes. Many Watch Hill rentals book a Friday-arrival dinner, a Sunday brunch, and a final-night dinner. The menus are built across the week so nothing repeats and the leftovers feed the in-between days.
